The Tri-Valley Life Sciences Summit returns October 13 to showcase promising life sciences companies and startups, as well as offer advice on how founders and vendors from the wider Bay Area can join in the region’s success. Last held in 2019, the event will again be hosted by Veeva Systems, which is headquartered at Hacienda. In addition to focusing on the Tri-Valley’s booming life sciences industry, the summit will “relay information, inspiration, and create networking opportunities for the speakers and attendees,” according to event organizer Startup Tri-Valley.
The region has seen continued growth in the life sciences field since 2019, including $1.92 billion raised in late stage-capital and $370 million in earlier stages, according to an economic analysis from Mirador Capital Partners. These figures include significant transitions last year for local life sciences startups such as healthcare wearables developer Movano, which raised $48.9 million in its initial public offering; Raydiant Oximetry, which develops technology that accurately measures fetal oxygenation during labor, received $5 million in Series A2 funding; and the acquisition of Unchained Labs, which develops biologics and gene therapy tools, for $435 million by the Carlyle Group.
“Tri-Valley life sciences companies displayed not only resilience but also growth in the face of many challenges,” notes Yolanda Fintschenko, Co-founder of FounderTraction and one of the event organizers for Startup Tri-Valley. Despite the pandemic, the Tri-Valley area saw $1.62 billion in capital raised from 2020 to 2022, according to Mirador. Capital raised in the life sciences sector reflected more than a 30% increase last year compared to 2020. In 2021, $770 million in capital was provided to the area’s life sciences companies.
“The Tri-Valley has developed a reputation as an ideal location to start and grow life sciences businesses,” says James Langford, Principal at Tri-Valley Ventures and Director of Research at Mirador, which is a presenting sponsor of the event. “We are continuing to see an increasing amount of innovation and even higher quality of early stage life science companies start their companies here, which further strengthens an already robust regional life science ecosystem.”
The summit will open with an analysis of the life sciences in the Tri-Valley investment landscape. The keynote event is a fireside chat with Ben Hindson, Chief Scientific Officer, Co-founder, and President of 10X Genomics, which develops innovative instruments, reagents, and software that analyze biological systems. Hindson will discuss the arc of the company’s development from its founding as a science startup in 2012 to becoming a publicly traded company. A panel discussion sponsored by Engine Room and moderated by Engine Room Co-founder Carole-Lynn Glass will analyze how Tri-Valley life sciences entrepreneurs and ecosystem leaders overcame obstacles or corrected course while building their companies. Additionally, recruiting event sponsors will be introduced as a group to attendees and potential job seekers, who will have an opportunity to meet the recruiters individually during the gathering’s final hour.
Startup Tri-Valley is an initiative backed by Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton, Danville and Lawrence Livermore and Sandia National Laboratories to grow the region’s startup economy. The Tri-Valley Life Sciences Summit, which is also supported by Tri-Valley Ventures as a presenting sponsor, will take place from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm on Thursday, October 13 at Veeva Systems. Tickets are free but registration is required to attend.
