"BKF has been providing civil engineering, land surveying, and land planning services for government agencies, institutions, developers, design professionals, contractors, school districts, and corporations for over 107 years. We leverage our diverse project portfolio in combination with innovative design solutions to deliver sustainable and dynamic projects for our communities and partners."
One recent example is LifeMoves Mountain View, a form of Supportive Interim Housing (SIH) that won the Urban Land Institute America's 2022 Award for Excellence. According to executives of BKF Engineers, the goal of SIH is to help participants find stable, permanent housing while simultaneously providing a clean, safe, calm, and flexible environment. Six months prior to construction, LifeMoves Mountain View was a car storage facility for abandoned vehicles. With the help of BKF's civil engineering and land surveying services, LifeMoves Mountain View became a modern, comfortable place that can house over 124 formerly homeless people while offering support to find new homes. BKF has provided similar services for LifeMoves facilities in Redwood City and Palo Alto, as well as the Fairmont Navigation Center & Shelter in San Leandro.
The award-winning firm was recently lauded as the number one Largest Engineering Firm by the Silicon Valley Business Journal, and in 2017, BKF was named California Design Firm of the Year by Engineering-News Record. Over more than a decade, BKF has won many accolades for its workplace culture and its excellent design work, most recently from the San Francisco Chronicle for being a 2022 Top Workplace.
While less well known, the company's summer internship and mentor programs are a vital part of its culture. "We offer a robust summer internship program for college students majoring in civil engineering or land surveying," notes Simbirdi. "This summer we have 39 interns working at 10 of our offices. Our company-wide internal mentorship program, called Spark, is available to all employees and involves almost 50 mentors and over 100 mentees. Spark provides a means for interested individuals to make a personal and professional connection with someone inside the company, with the goal of professional and personal development through mentoring."
Nearly 50 employees work at BKF's Hacienda office, which officially opened in 2001 and houses the firm's Transportation and Land Development offices. BKF Engineers has a network of 16 West Coast offices with a total of 548 employees. That includes 154 licensed engineers and 21 licensed surveyors.
The firm donates to several charitable organizations. They include the ACEC Scholarship Foundation, which offers scholarships to civil engineering students, and Shepherd's Gate, a shelter in Livermore that helps women and children escape abuse, addiction, and homelessness.
