Fusion Academy is a private school that provides education to middle and high school students. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the school follows the University of California A-G guidelines needed for students planning to attend a University of California college or university. Classes at Fusion are one-to-one, which means one student and one teacher per classroom. This allows teachers to personalize course content for each student's strengths, interests, and learning style.
"Our model is different because each and every student is unique, so we teach them in a unique way," says Derek Cavilla, Area Head of School. "All kinds of middle and high school students enroll at Fusion. Athletes, actors, and students with extracurricular passions can schedule school around their life instead of the other way around. Other students who attend Fusion include gifted or accelerated students, students with mild learning differences such as dyslexia, or those seeking a more personalized learning experience."
The Hacienda campus opened in 2019 as part of Futures Academy. It joined the Fusion Education Group, an education innovator in personalized education, in 2020. The Hacienda campus is one of 32 campuses in California. There are 80 Fusion campuses located throughout the United States, as well as a Global Academy that serves students virtually across the world. The Fusion Academy at Hacienda is the only one-to-one school in the Dublin-Pleasanton area, according to Cavilla.
"We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and small learning environment where everyone is treated with respect and supported based on their individual needs and circumstances," notes Cavilla. "Recently, we enrolled a student who was struggling with being bullied and didn't want to go to school. Plus, they were bored in their classes and not allowed to work at their appropriate intellectual level. After enrolling with Fusion and attending for two weeks, the student has made friends, loves school again, and is taking advanced classes that are engaging and motivating them to learn more and be proud of the products they are creating to share with their peers, teachers, and families. It is very satisfying to run a school where we are able to help children not only overcome struggles they have had at their prior schools, but also grow and blossom into young adults who excel both academically and socially as well as eventually become independent learners and advocates for themselves."
Fusion Academy is guided by a fundamental belief in the immense potential within every person, according to Cavilla, who says the school's mission is to help each student flourish - emotionally, socially, and academically - through positive, mentoring relationships and a personalized education experience. The school is focused on student academic progress as well as social and emotional well-being. One student to one teacher, with different teachers for every course, allows students to learn at their own pace, he notes, unlike traditional learning, in which 25 or more students are taught by one teacher, and where students are not always seen, heard, or engaged.
"The traditional education model does not work for all students and doesn't always allow them to realize and reach their full potential," Cavilla says. "Private schools are an important part of a community's education infrastructure. Just like clothes, one size does not really fit all. We continue to try on traditional models of education when they just do not fit for many kids. I encourage anyone who is curious about what we do to come and tour our campus. Seeing really is believing. Watching students engaged and empowered to learn is a remarkable sight."
