In November 2016, Nicholas Truong took over an existing cafe in the Hacienda Terrace building. Since then, the owner and operator of the Hacienda Cafe has overseen a variety of changes. The cafe, which is open from 8 am to 2 pm, expanded its 10-seat space by moving to a different location in the building. After renovations, the cafe now seats 36 people indoors and 46 people on a new outdoor patio.
While the location and decor have changed, Truong’s commitment to serving his customers has not. “My mission is to provide affordable, high-quality food to the working staff at Hacienda. Every day we make sure the food is fresh, and that our customers are well fed. We get bread shipped in from San Francisco and fresh produce delivered every day.”
The cafe’s breakfast menu includes a classic three-egg scramble with a choice of meat, toasted bagel, avocado toast, and more. Its signature sandwiches include a classic Club, Chicken Pesto, BLT, and an Ultimate Grilled Cheese with bacon. The menu also includes three versions of the famous Vietnamese Bánh Mì sandwich as well as three salads: Cobb, Asian Chicken, and Chicken Caesar. Chicken Tenders are also available; sides include sweet potato fries and onion rings.
In addition to dining in, customers can order takeout on the cafe’s website for later pick up. The Hacienda Cafe also caters breakfast and lunch for many Hacienda tenants. Breakfast options include trays of breakfast burritos or fresh baked pastry. Lunch offerings range from assorted signature sandwiches and chips or a variety of salads. “Really, the catering options are endless with us because we do custom meals as well,” according to Truong, who notes that the cafe has partnered with Starbucks for the cafe and its catered coffee service.
“We take tremendous care in putting together catering orders,” he adds. “We double-check and triple-check every order. We always deliver on time, which is especially important for meetings that are time-critical. Our food is of the highest quality, and I guarantee I will beat any price from any of the big chain sandwich competitors.”
New customers are sometimes surprised to discover that the Hacienda Cafe is an independent restaurant that happens to be inside of an office building rather than a type of corporate cafeteria. The difference will become even more obvious sometime next year, when the cafe will start using its wine and beer license and host live music. Truong envisions a weekly happy hour with a beer garden feeling thanks to the patio. Outside of the cafe, he and his staff of trained chefs give back to the community twice a year by helping cook Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for people in need at a local church or nonprofit.
“I would like others at Hacienda to remember that we are a small, family owned business,” says Truong. “I have four employees total. I'm here every day making connections with people. I think it's important to support local small businesses and give us a chance, because we won't let you down. We really do put incredible care into all our orders, all the sandwiches and other meals that we make for various businesses. Whether it's for catering or for someone coming in for breakfast or lunch, we want to take care of our community because we love our community. I think that's truly a part of being at Hacienda, everybody here is tied together.”
