Bay Area Fencing Club Teaches Teamwork, Sportsmanship, and Integrity

Founded in Los Gatos in 2021, the Bay Area Fencing Club quickly became one of the fastest-growing fencing programs in the nation. In March 2024, the organization opened a facility in Hacienda to make high-caliber fencing more accessible in the Tri-Valley. The club blends “an inclusive spirit with our uncompromising pursuit of excellence,” according to Wynne Zhang, Manager, Bay Area Fencing Club – Pleasanton.

Many people think of fencing in terms of romanticized swashbuckling, Zhang says, while in reality it is a dynamic, modern Olympic sport that balances agility, strategy, and respect for opponents. Fencers use advanced electronic scoring systems, train with cutting-edge methods, and often develop mental resilience and tactical thinking that are highly transferable to academics and career pursuits. It is also far more inclusive than most realize, welcoming athletes of all backgrounds and ages. The club’s programs range from an introductory course for children aged five and six to classes for those aged 11 and older. Private lessons are also available.

“At Bay Area Fencing Club, we blend centuries old tradition with a forward-thinking coaching philosophy, so that each student that walks through our doors can each discover the strategic, athletic, and personal growth benefits of fencing,” Zhang notes. “At Bay Area Fencing Club, our aspiration is clear: to develop a world-class fencing community where every athlete, whether newcomer or a seasoned competitor, feels at home. We place a strong emphasis on building community, both within our club and with the broader Tri-Valley area. We view fencing not just as a sport, but as a powerful vehicle for bringing people together. Families, neighbors, and aspiring champions all come together to learn from one another, celebrate successes, and grow in a supportive environment. This sense of belonging is at the core of our identity, and it’s what keeps our members engaged, motivated, and proud to be part of the Bay Area Fencing Club.”

The club’s Competitive Foil Program is led by world-class coaches with extensive national and international experience. The program offers top-tier technical instruction, strategic training, and mental conditioning to help athletes excel in competitive settings. This high-caliber approach not only prepares fencers for national-level tournaments but also fosters the discipline, confidence, and sportsmanship that benefit students both on and off the strip. The club also offers Youth Foil Training as well as Summer Camps, which are ideal for those trying fencing for the first time or those eager to sharpen existing skills in a condensed format.

“Fencing is a niche sport,” says Zhang. “Many people don’t know a single thing about it. We do our best to introduce and educate as many people as we can about the historic sport and its benefits as both a physical and mental exercise. Families often find the start of a fencing journey overwhelming: understanding gear, lesson scheduling, and competitive pathways. We offer step-by-step guidance on everything related to fencing, including classes, equipment, training schedules, and tournaments.”

The club’s offerings include Free Trial Sessions for beginners to explore fencing in a friendly, hands-on environment, Summer Camp Programs for beginner and intermediate students aged seven to 13; Adult Classes and Corporate Events for adults looking to learn fencing or experience team-building events; and Seasonal Camps and Clinics designed to sharpen fencing techniques and boost agility among participants. The club is also a sponsor of a local nonprofit that helps children in underserved communities with financial difficulties learn fencing.

“Fencing goes beyond athletics,” Zhang adds. “It develops focus, perseverance, and ethical sportsmanship. As a local club, we’re honored to add value to our community by nurturing active lifestyles and helping individuals, from children to adults, discover and reach their full potential.”
